Alle drei Bände der Cicero-Trilogie von Robert Harris sind meiner Meinung nach absolut lesenswert für jede/n, die / der sich für römische Geschichte und Politik im Allgemeinen interessiert. In seiner Trilogie erzählt Harris nüchtern, aber sprachlich immer brilliant, kurzweilig und abwechslungsreich vom Aufstieg und Fall Ciceros im antiken Rom. In Hinsicht auf die dramatis personae gelingt ihm eine sehr glaubwürdige, weil gründlich recherchierte Zeichnung der Figuren. Sei es Cicero selbst, dessen Widersacher Verres, seine Ehefrau, sein Sekretär Tiro oder irgendeine beliebige andere historische Person in den drei Romanen - all seinen Figuren verleiht Harris eine solche Tiefe, dass man durch die Lektüre glaubt, sie wirklich kennengelernt zu haben. Harris gelingt es auf beeindruckende Weise, vermeintlich staubige und langweilige Geschichte, mit der man vielleicht schon einmal durch den Latein- oder Geschichtsunterricht in Berührung gekommen ist, durch die Mittel der Literatur lebendig, spannend und gegenwärtig zu machen. Ich habe diese Trilogie verschlungen! Sie gehört meines Erachtens nach zu dem Besten, was im Bereich historischer Romane geschrieben wurde.
Kann mich an kein Buch erinnern, was ich so begierig verschlungen habe, wie dieses.Von der ersten Seite an führt es derart spannend durch's alte Rom, daß ich mit dem Umschlagen der Seiten kaum nachkam.Und es kaum erwarten konnte, bis seine beiden nicht weniger begeisternden Fortsetzungen eintrafen.Dabei hat mich weder die Epoche, noch Cicero je besonders interessiert und in wieweit diese fiktionale Erzählungnun wo welchen historischen Tatsachen entspricht ist mir auch heute ganz unwichtig.Doch was Robert Harris und sein wohltuend gradliniger Plot und seine stets eng am Thema orientierte Erzählweise daraus gemacht haben ist einfach super.
I know all the primary sources and scholary literature. I am amazed, how many details Mr Harris takes into account, and even more, how he manages to create suspense out of it. This is far beyond, what biopics use to offer. His prose is outstanding fine. The only flaw, that bothered me, is that Mr. Harris can't discern a woman from a hat rack. He really doesn't know, what to do with these strange creatures. Be aware, that every woman mentioned in the story, was much more interesting in reality.
Das Leben von Cicero, die gesellschaftliche und politische Situation wird hier spannend und lebhaft dargestellt. Ich habe dieses Buch in kurzer Zeit verschlungen und dafür auch Nachtschichten eingelegt. Ob es - wie in anderen Kommentaren dargestellt - Abweichungen / Kürzungen / Auslassungen von der Realität gibt, kann ich nicht beurteilen, aber einen plausiblen Gesamteindruck von der damaligen Situation und Lebensweise liefert dieses Buch auf jeden Fall (künstlerische Freiheit!).Gerade die Charaktäre und Intriegen sind sicherlich so aktuell wie heute und daher lässt sich die Geschichte - wenn auch schon über 2.000 Jahre alt - auch heute noch spannend lesen und verstehen.
Die Darstellung von Harris über den römischen Politbetrieb zu lesen, macht einfach Spass. Männerlektüre? Ich fands spannender, als die furchtbaren Debatten zwischen Hillary und Trump. Werder mir auf alle Fälle die Fortsetzung gönnen (am besten mit einem Gläschen Vino in Italien...)

'Imperium' is the first book of the whole trilogy, 'Lustrum' is the second part and it finishes with 'Dictator'.The books are so brilliantly written that you cannot put any of all 3 down...the books are more than 5 stars worth...Splendid way to revive the old times !
Imperium beschreibt den historischen Alltag zur Zeit Ciceros in Rom. Wahrscheinlich ist es besser, wenn man eine gewisse Vostellung von dieser Zeit schon vorher hat. insgesamt aber gelingt es Harris, die Materie sehr anregend zu erzählen und lebendig zu machen. Auch die Spannung kommt nicht zu kurz.
